Marshalltown,
Iowa, June 2002 – Emerson Process Management announced today that its
Fisher FIELDVUE® DVC6000 Series Digital Valve Controller has received
certification from TÜV, an internationally-recognized, German-based
inspection authority. With this certification, industrial manufacturers
worldwide may apply DVC6000 instruments to Emergency-Shutdown valves (ESD)
in Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
Emerson
asked a third-party authority in automation safety and product reliability
to conduct tests and analyze the performance of the Fisher FIELDVUE®
DVC6000 Series Digital Valve Controller. These tests included Failure Mode
Effect & Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA). Results prove that the product
complies with international standards including IEC 61508 for functional
safety and is suitable for use up to and including SIL3 applications.
Riyaz
Ali, a FIELDVUE Product Manager at Fisher, says the TÜV certification
process is comprehensive and thorough. "It not only covers detailed
FMEDA tests of every component of the Digital Valve Controller, but also
evaluates Fisher’s internal procedures and manufacturing competence to
comply with IEC 61508 requirements," he said. "With TÜV
certification, FIELDVUE instrument users, including those in the
standards-driven European marketplace, may be more confident about
applying Digital Valve Controllers in safety-instrumented systems."
Emergency
shutdown or block valves are designed to take the process to a safe state
if certain, pre-specified operating limits are exceeded. Adding a Digital
Valve Controller to these critical valves offers numerous benefits. With
the DVC6000 instrument, users may conduct partial-stroke tests of the
valve while the process is on-line. Simplified and secure testing
procedures facilitate more frequent testing and continuous monitoring.
Users may also improve their predictive maintenance through diagnostic
capabilities, enabling them to detect valve problems early, before they
become covert failures. Finally, FIELDVUE DVC6000 users may time and
date-stamp their valve-performance data to aid the documentation
requirements of IEC 61508.
Dr.
William M. Goble, a Professional Engineer and a certified Functional
Safety Expert, says responsible manufacturers contract for third-party
product evaluation and approval. "These tests provide a conservative
product failure rate and diagnostic data for the purpose of safety
integrity verification," he said. "Potential customers in the
safety market should ask for this data before ordering and applying the
product in their plant."

who leads TÜV, an internationally-recognized inspection authority,
presented Fisher Controls International LLC with a certificate
signifying that FIELDVUE® Digital Valve Controllers meet
requirements for functional safety (IEC 61508) and quality. Mike
