New Control Valve Trim Quiets Severe Service Noise

MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA, May 20, 1999 . . . . . Fisher Controls introduces WhisperFlo™ trim to achieve up to a 40 dBA reduction in the noise level of a valve controlling gas (aerodynamic) flow under severe service conditions. Representing a new concept in multi-path, multistage, acoustic energy management, WhisperFlo trim surpasses the noise attenuation capability of conventional designs by 25 to 30 percent.

Combining six key noise control techniques, WhisperFlo trim outperforms the noise control capabilities of conventional multi-hole trims and tortuous path designs. The six operating principles include: wfcover.jpg (12755 bytes)

  • Multistage pressure reduction

  • Reduced acoustical conversion efficiency of each stage.

  • Frequency spectrum shift

  • Exit jet independence

  • Velocity management

  • A complementary body design

The innovative trim design utilizes laser-machined discs that are stacked and permanently fused into a rigid cage assembly. The stack is precision honed to exacting dimensions and ready for immediate use within standard Fisher globe valve designs.

The unique design and operating features of WhisperFlo trim, combined with the advantages of laser-based manufacturing, bring new answers to excessive control valve noise, especially for those installations involving high pressure drops and high flow rates.

With the introduction of WhisperFlo trim, Fisher addresses problems typically associated with control valve noise. When extreme, control valve noise threatens employees' safety and well-being, and caused "bad neighbor" situations. Extreme noise levels also potentially warn of valve instability and pipeline vibration that can shorten equipment life.

According to Fisher engineers, WhisperFlo trim offers a noise attenuation capability that delivers predicted noise levels consistently, avoiding the costly need to recalculate and retrofit a valve in order to meet performance promises.
