FIELDVUE® Instruments Move Digital Control to the Valve. MARSHALLTOWN,
IOWA, January, 1999 . . . . . The FIELDVUE® instrument family of valve-mounted,
microprocessor-based controllers offered by Fisher Controls International LLC move the
intelligence and power of digital control directly to the control valve. Utilizing two-wire loop power, FIELDVUE instruments give operators a real-time view of conditions at the valve and instrument, including a look at operating integrity and emerging alert conditions. Operators also gain direct access to such critical valve parameters as input signal, stem position, and actuator pressure to improve control, enhance safety, and protect the environment. Benefits of the new FIELDVUE digital communications include a lower total installed cost; faster commissioning; improved process quality; reduced process downtime; reduced maintenance cost; and lower environmental impact with improved safety. The new FIELDVUE instruments provide an analysis of valve dynamics, such as step response and dynamic error band, which allows instrument and process engineers to optimize loop performance and to identify unwanted performance changes that can jeopardize product quality. With the FIELDVUE two-way communications capability, maintenance personnel can commission loops quickly by identifying each instrument, verifying or changing its calibration, reviewing previously stored maintenance notes, and more, all from a remote location. For the first time, diagnostics critical to gas system operations are readily accessible wherever they are needed--in the control room or in the field. Remote access to the FIELDVUE instrument means employee exposure to hazardous situations can be minimized and tough-to-reach valve locations can be avoided. Access is available at a field junction box or within the control room by using a hand-held communicator, a notebook or desktop PC, or a system console. FIELDVUE instruments are FOUNDATION fieldbus compatible, allowing their use in either fully integrated fieldbus-based control strategies, such as the Emerson Process Management PlantWeb solution, or as stand-alone devices. The FIELDVUE controllers also utilize the HART® communication protocol which makes them easy to install in existing 4-20 mA dc systems by using a HART multiplexer. FIELDVUE instruments offer control room and onsite cost savings with fewer termination points, half the number of twisted wire pairs, a reduced number of I/O cards and elimination of external travel stops, limit switches, and position transmitters. Without requiring additional field wiring, leak detectors or limit switches can be connected to auxiliary terminals within the instruments. This allows FIELDVUE to issue an alert should limits be exceeded. FIELDVUE instruments also provide easy tracking and alerting of packing wear, which can be used in making valve maintenance schedules. The new controllers are built "field tough" to survive the rigors of valve mounting. Their design incorporates such features as fully encapsulated wiring boards that shrug off the effects of vibration and corrosive atmospheres, a separate field wiring termination compartment to isolate field wiring connections, and a IP65 (IEC592)/NEMA 4X housing. Fisher Controls, a member of the Emerson Process Management family of companies, provides cost-effective control valves and regulators for the energy and process industries. Emerson Process Management is the world's largest supplier of high-quality process control products and real-time process solutions for managing the process better, including valves, regulators, transmitters, analyzers, process management systems, and related services.
